INTERVIEW WITH RACHEAL TRAIL @rachealtrail.nz
Firstly, can you start with a little bit about yourself?
I was born in Foxton, a small town in the north island of New Zealand, I have been dairy farming for most of my life and love the outdoors, I love being active and just getting out and exploring my surroundings
When did you first start your photography journey?
I have been doing photography for over 10 years on and off but it wasn’t until about 2 years ago that I really found my passion for it.
How would you describe your photography style?
I have a broad style and like trying most things but I really do love landscapes and really seeing the beauty that nature creates.
What kind of equipment do you use?
I use the Sony A7rii which I have just upgraded to from the Sony A7r. I really do love the size and how easy it is to use, not to mention the beautiful shot I can get.
Do you have a favourite lens and Why?
It would have to be the Sony 16-35mm f/4 it really is my go to lens that is so useful for most shooting landscapes.
It’s safe to say New Zealand has some of the most majestic scenery in the world. What is it about landscapes that you enjoy capturing?
just the amazingness of it all, it doesn’t take much to look around and see the most amazing scene and to be able to capture that it just blows me away.
What time of the day do you prefer to shoot?
I would have to say early morning or early evening. In saying that it all depends on the weather.
What methods do you use for editing, can you explain your current workflow?
I always edit with lightroom, I have a few go to presets that I use and then I just tweak where needed. If the shot needs extra work I’ll go over to photoshop and tidy it up in there.
What is the most memorable country you have visited?
Other than NZ I have only been to Australia, I would love to travel but want to see so much more of this amazing country first it just blows me away.
What country are you dying to shoot in but haven’t had the chance yet?
That would have to be Norway.
You are a moderator for several Instagram sites, would you tell me about these?
Landscapes.nz is a relatively new page which helps to showcase some of NZ’s stunning places, we post 2 a day and do a Friday feature shoutout.
Raw_australia_nz is again another relatively new page that features amazing shots from both countries, we post 3 times a day and have a roster on who post on what day.
Raw_waters is definitely my favourite of the three as I get so choose some fantastic long exposure shots. We post 3 times a day and are also on a roster.
Among all your work what is your most memorable capture?
Oh gosh um, that would have to be at Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tane and the most amazing canyon.
How do you educate yourself to be become a better photographer?
I try to learn from other great photographers and always constantly try new techniques
Who are your greatest photography influencers?
That would have to be Brent Purcell and Deb Clarke in New Zealand and Brett Wood from Australia.
Lastly what advice would give to someone starting out in photography?
Never be afraid to try new things and don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work the first time, don’t get to hung up on the technical side and just trust your eye and instinct. And always try to have fun
