INTERVIEW WITH TRACY NAUGHTON @letmesea

Tracy is the Photographer and artist behind Let Me Sea… She finds her Inspiration through music, art, and of course, the Ocean. Originally from New Zealand but now calls the Sunshine Coast her home. Drawn to the natural beauty of the coastal lifestyle, Tracy developed her own signature style well recognised amongst locals.

You immediately know one of Tracy’s images where you see it. That is a unique quality. She regularly holds exhibitions and enjoys collaborating on creative projects. In addition, Tracy creates limited edition hand drawn or painted art.

What equipment do you use to create your images and why did you select it?

I shoot with a Canon 5d Mark iii I selected it as I previously had a 7D but wanted to get a full frame camera that created good quality images.

What would be your favourite lens and why?

Probably my Canon 100-400mm zoom lens as the glass produces such sharp, clear images and I can get quite close to my subjects.

How does the surf lifestyle influence your imagery?

I’m not actually a surfer, I just love the connection between human and natural elements.  Surfers make the perfect subject as there are endless possibilities.

Which photographers have inspired you, and how did they influence you?

I’m continually inspired by women surf photographers such as Fran Miller, Alana Spencer Cait Miers,  & Luki O’Keefe but also other artists and photographers Woody Gooch is impressive and although not a surf photographer Elle May Watson’s style is so unique.  I feel like these photographers have encouraged me to think outside the square look for something different and don’t be afraid to try out new creative ways of approaching photography.

Do you think you need to be a surfer to shoot the ocean?

I was told when I first started that I needed to be a surfer to understand surf photography and I do understand that to some extent, and I’m not saying I know everything.

I would love to learn shooting from the water that is a whole other ball game.

Three things you have learnt this past year?

Persistence pays off.  To let go of expectations.  Supporting your peers is more valuable than you can know.

What inspires your creative vision?

I have always been a creative person; it’s such a cliché, but I have literally always drawn from when I was little.  So I have many inspirations in art and photography also the natural environment is so inspiring the endless beauty and magic you can find if you put yourself out there is priceless.

How have you developed your imagery over the years? What steps have you taken to continue to improve your work?

My imagery has changed a lot over the years I used to shoot with one vision in mind, but slowly I have changed and evolved, and I think it because I am always looking to improve my skills and practising what I learn along the way.

Have you ever had any experiences in the ocean that really scared you?

Not yet but I hope to get a water housing in the future which I am a little bit nervous about as I am not the most confident in the water!

Where is your favourite destination to shoot?

If you have seen any of my work, it is a bit obvious that Noosa is my number one! But I also love travelling, and one of my favourite spots to shoot overseas was Scotland it holds a special place in my heart.  I also would like to make a photography trip to my homeland NZ one day soon.
